Easy Apple Cobbler Recipe

Easy Apple Cobbler Recipe

Apple Cobbler is a baked dessert where spiced apples are layered at the bottom and topped with a biscuit-like batter or cake topping that becomes crisp on the outside and soft underneath. Unlike pie, cobbler doesn’t require rolling dough — making it much easier to prepare while still offering all the comforting flavors of baked apples.

Ingredients

Scale

For the apple filling:

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)

  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing the dish)

For the cobbler topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ¾ cup milk (whole or 2%)

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your baking dish with butter to prevent sticking and add extra flavor.

Step 2: Prepare the Apple Filling

Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin, even slices (about ¼ inch thick). Place them in a mixing bowl. Add lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch (if using). Toss until the apples are evenly coated and glossy.

Step 3: Cook the Apples (Optional but Recommended)

For softer apples and a richer flavor, cook the apple mixture in a skillet over medium heat for 5 minutes until slightly tender. Remove from heat and transfer to the prepared baking dish.

Step 4: Prepare the Cobbler Batter

In another bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk to mix. Gradually add milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract (if using). Stir until you have a smooth batter — it should be pourable but not too thin.

Step 5: Assemble the Cobbler

Pour the batter evenly over the apple mixture. Do not stir. The batter will rise through the apples as it bakes, creating a beautiful golden crust.

Step 6: Bake

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the topping comes out clean. The apple filling should be bubbling gently around the edges.

Step 7: Cool and Serve

Let the cobbler cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the perfect finishing touch.
