French toast casserole is a baked version of the breakfast favorite. Instead of frying individual slices, cubed bread is soaked in a rich egg custard flavored with cinnamon, vanilla, and milk, then baked until soft and slightly crisp on top. It’s easy to prepare and can be made ahead for stress-free mornings.
1 loaf of French bread or brioche, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 10–12 cups)
8 large eggs
2 ½ cups milk (or half-and-half for creamier texture)
½ cup heavy cream (optional for richer flavor)
¾ cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter, melted
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. Arrange the cubed bread evenly in the dish.
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread down so every piece is coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for best flavor.
In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, melted butter, and cinnamon. Sprinkle evenly over the top before baking.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, until the top is golden and the center is set but still slightly soft.
Let the casserole cool for 5–10 minutes. Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.
