Best French Toast Recipe

French Toast recipe

French Toast is a classic breakfast dish made by soaking slices of bread in a mixture of eggs, milk, and flavorings, then frying them until golden. The result is a rich, custardy interior with a slightly crisp exterior. It’s often topped with butter, syrup, or fruit, and enjoyed as both a sweet and savory meal. The beauty of French toast lies in its simplicity — turning leftover bread into something truly special.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 cup whole milk (or half-and-half for creamier texture)

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)

  • 8 slices thick bread (brioche, challah, or Texas toast recommended)

  • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Make the custard: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar, and salt until smooth.

  • Dip the bread: Pour the mixture into a shallow dish. Dip each slice of bread into the custard, coating both sides evenly. Let it soak for 10–15 seconds per side.

  • Heat the skillet: Place a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt butter.

  • Cook the French toast: Lay the soaked bread on the pan and cook for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and slightly crisp.

  • Repeat and keep warm: Transfer cooked slices to a plate and keep warm while finishing the rest.

  • Serve: Dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with maple syrup, and top with fruits or whipped cream.
