Fluffy French Toast With Flour

Fluffy French Toast With Flour

French Toast with Flour is a slight twist on the traditional recipe. The flour in the batter helps thicken the egg and milk mixture, making it more like pancake batter. This allows the bread to soak up the custard evenly while maintaining a fluffy interior and crisp exterior. It’s perfect for those who love French toast that’s light, soft, and a bit more filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 cup milk (whole milk or half-and-half for richer texture)

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, for warmth)

  • Pinch of salt

  • 8 slices thick bread (brioche or Texas toast recommended)

  • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Batter

In a medium bowl, whisk the flour and milk together first. Mixing the flour with milk before adding other ingredients ensures there are no lumps. Continue whisking until smooth.

Step 2: Add Remaining Ingredients

Add eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt to the mixture. Whisk thoroughly until everything is well combined and slightly frothy. The batter should have a smooth, thick consistency — similar to pancake batter.

Step 3: Prepare the Bread

Use thick slices of bread that can soak up the batter without breaking apart. Slightly stale bread works best because it holds shape and absorbs flavor better. Lay the slices aside on a plate.

Step 4: Preheat the Pan

Place a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a small amount of butter. Let it melt until it starts to bubble, coating the surface evenly.

Step 5: Dip the Bread

Pour the batter into a shallow dish. Dip one slice of bread at a time, coating both sides thoroughly but not letting it soak too long — about 10–15 seconds per side is enough. Allow any excess batter to drip off before transferring to the pan.

Step 6: Cook Until Golden

Lay the coated bread slices onto the hot skillet. Cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and slightly crisp. Adjust heat if needed to avoid burning. The flour in the batter helps form a beautifully golden crust.

Step 7: Keep Warm and Repeat

Transfer cooked slices to a plate and cover loosely with foil to keep them warm while you cook the remaining pieces.

Step 8: Serve and Enjoy

Serve hot with butter, maple syrup, powdered sugar, or your favorite toppings like berries, whipped cream, or honey. Each slice should be crisp on the outside and pillow-soft inside.
