For the pasta bake:

  • 12 oz (340g) pasta (penne, fusilli, or rigatoni)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp dried oregano or thyme
  • ½ cup heavy cream (or milk for a lighter version)
  • 2 cans (5 oz each) tuna in olive oil, drained
  • ½ cup frozen peas (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)

For the cheese topping:

  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (for extra crunch)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

  1. Boil water in a large pot, season with salt, and cook the pasta 1 minute less than package instructions (it will finish baking in the oven).
  2. Drain and set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Sauce

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onions and garlic for 3-4 minutes until soft.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in cream and drained tuna, breaking it up gently. Simmer for 2 minutes.
  5. Add frozen peas (if using) and stir to combine.

Step 3: Assemble the Bake

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Combine pasta and sauce, mixing well. Transfer to a greased baking dish.
  3. Top with grated cheddar, Parmesan, and breadcrumbs for a crispy crust.

Step 4: Bake and Serve

  1. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
  2. Let it cool for 5 minutes, then serve hot.
