Gordon Ramsay Mince and Tatties

Mince and Tatties is a traditional Scottish dish made with minced beef (ground beef) simmered in a thick, rich gravy and served over creamy mashed potatoes (tatties). Gordon Ramsay’s version adds depth of flavor using Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and fresh herbs, making this dish even more delicious.

For the Mince (Ground Beef)

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 lb (450g) minced beef (ground beef)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon tomato paste
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 ½ cups beef stock
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

For the Tatties (Mashed Potatoes)

  • 2 lbs (900g) potatoes (Maris Piper or Yukon Gold)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup milk (or cream for extra richness)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For Garnish & Serving

  • Fresh parsley, chopped
  • A drizzle of extra butter (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tatties (Mashed Potatoes)

  1. Peel and chop the potatoes into even-sized chunks.
  2. Boil in salted water for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender.
  3. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  4. Keep warm while preparing the mince.

Step 2: Cook the Mince (Ground Beef)

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onions and carrots for 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add minced beef and brown for 5-7 minutes, breaking it up as it cooks.
  5. Season with salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, thyme, and rosemary.
  6. Pour in beef stock and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes until thickened.
  7. If needed, mix cornstarch with a little water and stir in to thicken.

Step 3: Assemble and Serve

  1. Spoon the mince over the mashed tatties.
  2. Garnish with fresh parsley and a drizzle of melted butter.
  3. Serve hot and enjoy!
